The explorer's suitcase: what to pack for the Galapagos (beyond wonder)

Packing for the Galapagos is not like packing for a normal vacation. It's about assembling gear for an expedition, an adventure where comfort, practicality, and respect for the environment are the watchwords. A well-thought-out bag will free you from all worries, allowing you to focus solely on the magic that surrounds you.

1. The "Onion" principle: dressing in layers

The climate in the Galapagos can change rapidly. In a single day, you can go from the intense equatorial sun to a cool breeze carried by the Humboldt Current. The solution is layering:

Base Layer: lightweight, breathable T-shirts.

Mid Layer: a sweatshirt or a light fleece.

Outer Layer: a light, waterproof windbreaker, essential for splashes during panga rides and for cooler evenings, especially during the dry season.

2. For land exploration

You will be walking on lava rock trails, sand, and dirt. Footwear is crucial:

light hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers: with a good sole for grip on uneven terrain.

Trekking sandals or water shoes: perfect for "wet landings" (when you step off the dinghy directly into the water) and to protect your feet.

3. For the dialogue with the Ocean

Snorkeling is an unmissable experience.

Swimsuits: bring at least two, so you always have a dry one.

UV-protection shirt (rash guard): essential. It protects you from the sun while snorkeling and provides light thermal insulation in cooler waters.

Biodegradable, high-protection sunscreen: an act of respect for the delicate marine life.

4. The Tools of a silent witness

Camera and/or smartphone: with spare batteries and extra memory cards. You won't want to miss a moment.

Binoculars: not an optional item, but an essential tool. They will allow you to capture the details of a distant bird's plumage or the expression of a sea lion without invading its space.

Reusable water bottle: potable water is available on the islands and vessels to refill it. A small gesture to eliminate single-use plastic.

A light and intelligent suitcase is the first step toward an immersive journey. Preparing adequately means being able to forget about logistics and surrender completely to an unparalleled experience.
